When and how did you discover your passion for makeup?
When I was 18 years old I worked for the Bobbi Brown makeup counter at Nordstrom in Towson. Having the opportunity to practice my skills on so many different complexions and age ranges helped me grow so much as an artist. I was hooked after I met Bobbi Brown in New York for a training in 2005. After that I knew this is what I was meant to do with my life. Fast forward …I followed my mind instead of my heart and went to school to become a speech pathologist. I worked as a speech therapist for 5 years. I enjoyed working with children …but even back then I always kept up my freelance work because I just couldn’t give it up!
How was Ariel Lewis LLC born?
In 2011 I became pregnant with our first child Selena. My husband and I discussed me becoming a stay at home mom. When the reality of what that entailed finally settled in I panicked! The thought of my husband giving me an “allowance” every month completely freaked me out. I knew it would be detrimental to our marriage lol! So I decided to start heavily promoting my freelance makeup work to have some income of my own. The LLC was born in 2012 after my first year. At that point I had a four person hair and makeup team. Sarah, Jodi, and Melinda were my very first team members …and they are still making “pretty people” by my side today.
What was your ah-ha moment that Ariel Lewis was no longer just a freelance creative outlet but a full blown career?
When I saw that we needed more hair stylist and makeup artist in order to keep up with all our inquires and not turn away brides. This was also when I realized my passion for creating jobs for other artist. I work really hard to foster a team culture that truly set us apart from all of our competition!
What qualities or traits do you seek in the artists you partner with for your team?
I look for artist who are equally passionate as I am about empowering their clients through our talents. Hair and make up is just the tool we use to create a positive impact on our clients day. I also recently started a mentoring program for younger artist. I think this industry is really competitive in a negative way. I love showing other artist what I’ve learned and love to learn from them! I look for team players and artist who understand the value of building each other up instead of tearing each other apart.
Alist is a platform for our clients to access our incredibly talented team of hair and make up artist for any kind of event that is non-bridal. We offer private make up lessons, spray tans, lash extensions, blow outs, and more in the comfort of your own home! Alist also has a whole team of special effects and editorial artist available for video productions in Maryland, D.C., and Baltimore. Alist artist are also available to book for interactive special event beauty bars! What the heck is that? Lol, it’s a huge new trend in L.A. for galas and corporate entertainment. We come to events and set up “lash bars, lipstick bars, and blush bars”. Guest can come get a quick bar touch up while enjoying their VIP event.
What has been your greatest challenge or obstacle?
Understanding that I can’t do everything alone!
How have you and are you overcoming that challenge?
I’ve reached the point where I feel comfortable delegating some of the workload to people on my team. We’ve grown so much and quickly. It was terrifying and exciting at the same time. I never want to lose my quality standards. I refuse to sacrifice quality for quantity. I’m lucky to have an incredible team who offers to help me out.
Where do you see yourself and your businesses in 5 years?
I see the Ariel Lewis, A-list team going national. I see several members of our current team stepping into leadership roles in the company. I see us having some of our lead artist in management positions for different regions. I see us having other artist in recruitment positions. To be honest the thing I’m most excited about is the fact that I truly believe I will still have many of the artist who are by my side today standing next to me when we reach that level. Some of these girls have been with me since we use to do makeup in the spare bedroom of my house (with terrible lighting and hideous brown walls).
What is the best part of your job?
Being blessed with the opportunity to wake up every day and never feel like I’m going to work. I realize how fortunate I am to love my job as much as I do. My insane passion for building this business for all of us is what has made this journey so much fun. The fact that I get to work alongside some pretty rad #girlbosses everyday is a pretty sweet bonus too!
Thank you, Ariel for giving your absolute best to the industry, your clients and your team each day!
